A big-band playing the jazzy vibes of Cuphead, followed by a symphonic concert featuring music from Ori and the Will of the Wisps, as well as Ori and the Blind Forest– all performed live in London’s Royal Festival Hall, during an event fully devoted to the soundtracks of video games. Game Music Festival is not just concerts with the music of video games but also multiple educational events.
This time, the fully-fledged festival dedicated to the music of video games will take place in London. On the 5th and 6th of March 2022, the famous stage of the Royal Festival Hall in London will be filled with original arrangements of fan-favorite video game soundtracks, as well as various accompanying events. The educational stream will take place on the first day, while both concert will be played live on the second day. Three previous editions of the Game Music Festival were praised by fans worldwide, attracting an audience of over 12,000 on-site participants total.
The Jazz of Cuphead is the first concert of Game Music Festival 2022. The jazzy vibes of Cuphead, an unmistakably stylish platformer, will be interpreted on stage by a seasoned big-band. Full of early styles of jazz mixed with ragtime music, the original soundtrack of Cuphead swiftly transports the listener to a world inspired by Duke Ellington and Count Basie, but always with a twist. All of this led to Cuphead winning the well-deserved BAFTA Games Award for Best Music. Old-school jazz shall resonate throughout the Royal Festival Hall as the composer of Cuphead, Kristofer Maddigan himself, joins the audience on-site for this performance by the Bartosz Pernal Orchestra – a groovy ensemble of experienced musicians led by a charismatic trombone player.
Lauded by the critics and millions of fans worldwide, Ori and the Will of the Wisps quickly gained the reputation of being a masterpiece, with special merit given to its unforgettable score by Gareth Coker, a multi-BAFTA-nominated composer and winner of the 2021 Ivor Novello Award for Best Original Video Game Score. Together with Ori and the Blind Forest, both of these universally acclaimed soundtracks form the musical material of The Symphony of the Spirits, the second concert of Game Music Festival 2022. This arrangement has been created by maestro Robert Kurdybacha, who is no stranger to the music of video games – he wrote several fan-favorite symphonies for the previous GMFs. Gareth Coker himself is also coming to the Royal Festival Hall for this very special occasion. The performance by Philharmonia Orchestra and Hertfordshire Chorus will take the audience on a journey through Ori’s world as never heard before.
Game Music Festival is not just concerts with the music of video games but also multiple educational events. Saturday the 5th of March will be the day of GMF 2022 educational stream. During masterclass workshops, participants will be able to see the backstage of how audio is being created for games, as well as improve their competencies and learn many tips & tricks. Details of the educational stream will be unveiled later on. Those sessions will be a unique opportunity to have closer look into the world of music and sounds of contemporary video games. This can be very beneficial for everyone who plans to build a career in composing or designing sound for games.
